Designing an efficient telecommunications network requires careful planning of its architecture and cost structure. These are the key factors that determine the success and profitability of your investment. Equally important is selecting the ideal locations for network expansion. Unfortunately, traditional pre-investment analyses are often slow, limiting your ability to quickly assess and compare multiple scenarios.
This can result in misguided decisions, leading to the development of a network that underperforms and fails to meet user demands. To address this challenge, we developed the FTTH Investment Planner. It’s a GIS-based solution designed to streamline decision-making processes, reduce risks, and maximize your return on investment.
What Is FTTH Investment Planner?
FTTH Investment Planner is a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool tailored for telecom operators. It automates the creation of High-Level Designs (HLDs) for networks and, based on these designs, provides precise investment cost estimates. Additionally, the tool offers automated profitability analyses for selected locations. FTTH Investment Planner is built on our GIS GeoGrid system and leverages the FME Platform for seamless data management.

How to Quickly Estimate Telecom Investment Costs and Profitability with FTTH Investment Planner
In this section, we’ll walk you through a step-by-step process for evaluating telecom investment projects using FTTH Investment Planner.
1. Identify Prime Locations for Investment
FTTH Investment Planner begins by analyzing address points that represent individual buildings.
Each point is enriched with comprehensive data, including:
- Address details,
- Building type and usage (office, retail, or residential),
- Existing networks owned by your operator in the area,
- Competitor networks within the location,
- Demographic information,
- Additional data selected during implementation.
To pinpoint locations that hold potential for future development, select your desired area and input the parameters you want to analyze. FTTH Investment Planner will then identify clusters of interest. Each cluster is assigned a score, indicating its investment potential. For example, clusters with a high density of buildings and minimal competitor presence are flagged as high-potential areas.
An investment area (cluster) identified by FTTH Investment Planner is highlighted in green, indicating strong investment potential. The cluster showcases buildings that meet your selected criteria, with different colors representing your network and competitors’ networks.
Clusters are color-coded based on their profitability potential: green for the highest, yellow for medium, and red for the lowest. This visual representation allows you to quickly identify the most promising and least attractive areas for future development. The results are presented on a detailed map.
Additionally, individual buildings within clusters are color-coded to indicate network coverage. This feature helps you quickly see which addresses are already served by your network and which are covered by competitors.
Beyond the map, FTTH Investment Planner includes customizable dashboards that consolidate all generated data about clusters. For instance, you can view the percentage of clusters with the highest and lowest profitability potential. Dashboard charts can be tailored to your specific needs, and you can also display specific dashboard information on the map for further analysis.
2. Develop Network HLDs and Estimate Initial Construction Costs
FTTH Investment Planner goes beyond just assessing the profitability potential of a location. It also enables you to swiftly create preliminary cost estimates for your network expansion.
After conducting the initial location potential analysis, you can select multiple clusters of interest. From there, the tool allows you to generate preliminary telecommunication network designs. In addition to address points, FTTH Investment Planner can incorporate existing infrastructure into your design, which can be imported from sources like the Physical Network Inventory system.
Within a selected green cluster, indicating high profitability potential, FTTH Investment Planner generates an initial network design. The screenshot shows detailed information about the specific elements of the proposed network.
At this stage, you can easily estimate the costs associated with expanding your network in a given location. The estimation is based on the information provided about the network elements included in the generated design, as well as the costs of specific components and their installation.
Just as with the profitability analysis of clusters, you can select multiple generated High-Level Designs (HLDs) for further comparison and analysis using dashboards.
